Artist's Description

George Hegel believed that art reflected, by its very nature, the culture of the time in which it is created. Culture and art are inextricable because an individual artist is a product of his or her time and therefore brings that culture to any given work of art.

Furthermore, he believed that in the modern world it was impossible to produce classical art, which he believed represented a "free and ethical culture", which depended more on the philosophy of art and theory of art, rather than a reflection of the social construct, or Zeitgeist in which a given artist lives.

I am a reflection of that I have experienced in my life. This includes all the different styles of art that have passed my eyes during my 71 years of living. Constantly striving, constantly producing, we reflect what we see as artists, whether from our minds or reality. Sometimes it is a combination of both.

I would work 8-10 hours daily on engraving a contour map with a hand held, .002 line engraver for up to 200 hours, depending on the terrain being mapped. Drawing tools have become an extension of my hand. My daily work, for over 20 years, touched on all parts of mapping, from surveyors’ notes to map folding. This daily environment was a constant honing of eye/hand skills. I have 7 basic forms that guide me, square, round, elliptical, triangle, hexagon, oval and rectangle. Master the line...
