Description
S.S. Kresge & Company (250 West Main, Lexington, KY). This is a colored pencil drawing of the snack bar that was located at the back of this Kresge store. The sit-down counter was toward the front of the store. I remember my grand parents taking me and my sister to all the dime stores on Main Street whenever they came down from Illinois for a visit.
This store was in the block between Upper and Mill on Main Street and a back entrance from Water Street. From the candy counters, to notions, toys, clothing and general household items, these stores stayed fairly busy. Kresge became K-Mart and moved their stores out of downtown's and into a more suburban setting.
This photograph caught my attention and it was perfect to a colored pencil drawing. I liked doing the reflective surfaces and the different textures of laminate, chrome, tiles, signs and mirrors, these where nice challenges for me.

Beautiful work, David, as always! We had a Kresge's and a Woolworth's in Holland, Michigan when I was growing up, and the Woolworth's had the snack bar, not the Kresge's. My grandmother would sometimes take me shopping and if I was lucky, she'd let me get a fountain Coke there! L/F

David, again, your color pencil technique is both beautiful and amazing. Wonderful work with fine lighting and detail. F/L.

you had a challenge with all those different surfaces and this art work is masterful. L/F
